Abstract

2D filtering methods applied to surface seismic data give unsatisfactory results when strong discontinuous shallow events interfere with deep much weaker reflecfions. 2D acoustic datuming equivalent to a forward extrapolation can create a seismogram where events are coherent, consequently conditions for wave separation by 2D filtering methods become appropriate. The method is illustrated by a common VP gather acquired on outcropping volcanics in the Great Basin in Nevada.
