Abstract

Upper Carboniferous deltaic deposits in Kentucky and surrounding states have been studied for several decades and many depositional models have been applied. Most of the depositional patterns are explained with autocyclic or tectonic models. Extensive road-cut exposures in the Appalachians of eastern Kentucky provide an exceptional opportunity to study the sedimentology and, together with information of wireline logs, apply sequence stratigraphy to coal-bearing strata of fluvio-deltaic origin.
