Abstract
The development of natural gas as a primary energy source has meant solving the problem of meeting constantly-varying demand from a fixed rate of production and delivery. The need to store large quantities of gas in consumer countries has only been met by the growth of underground storage, of which there are three main types - depleted gas and oil fields - aquifer storage - disused mine workings, purpose-mined cavities in rock and solution-mined cavities in salt.
