Abstract
Summary
We challenge the common assumption that salt anisotropy can be ignored in velocity model building for seismic imaging. We present a case study for salt anisotropy and its impact on the estimation of salt body shape and the imaging of subsalt structures. First we discuss salt properties. Then we study the impact of ignoring salt anisotropy on imaging using synthetic data from a modification of the SEAM Phase 1 earth model that includes anisotropy in the salt. Subsequently we show a field data example from the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and demonstrate that imaging improves when salt anisotropy is assumed.
