Abstract
In addressing the geomechanical aspects of field development and containment, particularly in the face of resource limitation, screening and ranking is needed to identify the fields that are at risk for containment loss. Fields in the global portfolio of a production company are never at the same risk level for containment loss, and therefore do not require the same level of urgency or sophistication for addressing the geomechanical issues.
A structured screening process is established for high level geomechanical risk identification. It comprises of a standard set of screening criteria and methodology that would uniformly apply to all regional fields and developments, and culminate in appropriate recommendations for geomechanical work based on field development plans, geological settings and formations characteristics.
The application of the screening process is able to provide an overall fields ranking in terms of geomechanics risk focusing on containment and process safety for 16 offshore Malaysia fields in varied geological settings and formations properties. Key geomechanical threats per operation are identified based on the risk scoring. Specific fields that require detailed geomechanical analysis are also identified.
