Abstract

Summary

Amu Darya Basin considered as an important hydrocarbon province, part of it seated in NE of Iran and East of Kopet Dagh inverted basin.

In spite of significant exploration efforts, just 3 gas fields have been found in Eastern Kopet Dagh sub-basin. The fields are in complex traps in late Jurassic carbonate and early Cretaceous clastic reservoirs.

The hydrocarbon productive zones along the East of Kopet Dagh basin are poorly characterized.

A multidisciplinary study was carried out including thin sections, cores, facies/microfacies, wireline analysis and well test data along with seismic data together to promote exploration activities in the region. Seismic-facies mapping analysis of late Jurassic carbonate shows buildups as a main gas productive zone. Buildups extend beyond the Khangiran Gas field; towards the south and the west, and correlate-able with Oxfordian Reefs of Amu Darya Basin. Buildups structurally located above Triassic-Jurassic tilted blocks with N-S direction. Stratigraphic traps in the Late Jurassic Carbonate Mozduran Formation are introduced as a new possible hydrocarbon potential in the East of Kopet Dagh basin.
