Abstract

A preliminary overview of digital downhole microseismic monitoring at the SaskPower Aquistore carbon capture and storage project in the Williston basin is discussed. The digital downhole monitoring system is presented, which has been successfully deployed for up to six weeks at 2800 m and 115⁰C. Technical experiences are described, including difficulties and solutions in sustained operation at extreme conditions. 750 gigabytes of high quality seismic monitoring data was obtained and reviewed for seismic events by moveout and signal to noise ratio. Teleseismic events, mine blasting, and dynamite orientation shots were all spotted easily. A present lack of induced seismicity looks promising for carbon capture and storage in the Williston basin, but monitoring data is still being more carefully reviewed with automated selection algorithms.
