Abstract

In this paper we will examine different techniques used during 3D marine data acquisition to reduce the amount of additional "infill" data required. In particular, we will look at how tapered binning is applied, its underlying assumptions, and the geophysical and economic concerns resulting from using tapered binning. We will also examine how tapers are applied in the field, the consequences and subsequent effects on processing techniques. In relation to this, the effects on stacking, DMO, AVO, and migration of a data set before and after tapering process are discussed .
