Abstract

F012 AVO analysis with an optimal linear AVO approximation Introduction 1 In AVO analysis it is usual to approximate AVO responses by linear approximations involving trigonometric functions of the reflection angle θ. These approximations normally assume that the contrasts of the seismic parameters across reflectors are small. They may be rather inaccurate e.g. close to the critical angle and these inaccuracies in some situations may strongly affect the quality of the AVO analysis. We present a method (called OptAVO) that enables to build more accurate linear AVO approximations. The coefficients of the basis functions of the new approximation represent new
