Abstract

Many geophysical variables exhibit fractal or at least scaling behaviour, notably in having power spectra proportional to some power of frequency (e.g. Pilkington and Todoeschuck, 1991). Extremely complex behaviour can be then described by simple models. Perhaps the simplest fractal models are the scaling noises (Mandelbrot, 1983, p .351). These are stochastic series with power spectra P proportional to some power (α) of (spatial or time) frequency f: P - fα.
