Abstract

Bangladesh occupies the greater part of the Bengal basin (the largest basin in the World; Coleman, 1969), lying at the confluence of the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems. Basin formation was initiated in the early Cretaceous as a response to the breakup of Gondwana along the rifted passive margin of the Indian plate (Curry and Moore, 1974). Grastal collision, subduction and orogeny in the Tertiary resulted in abundant sedimentation to the prograding deltaic submarine fan systems and the formation of anticlinal traps in the eastern part of the basin (Salt et al, 1986) thus establishing a highly prospective environment for hydrocarbons.
