Abstract
The land areas of Norway and Sweden can be regarded as a dome structure where the Late Paleozoic to Cenozoic cover has been removed (Fig.1) . Recent studies indicate that erosion and uplift races increased dramatically in the Late Pliocene and Pleistocene (Riis and Fjeldskaar 1992). This is illustrated by the volume of sediments of this age which was deposited on the shelf west of Norway and the Barents Sea (Fig. 1). The complete Mesozoic and Cenozoic section dips regularly away from the Fennoscandian coast (Dore 1992 ; Sigmond in press), and a Cenozoic (Eocene and Plio-Pleistocene) age for the uplift is indicated (Riis1992).
