Abstract

In the 1950's the Estarreja Chemical Complex (CQE) of industrial plants was constructed, north of Aveiro, north-west Portugal. Fluid effluent from this industrial complex is discharged via channels into the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon 6km to the west. Additional waste has been stockpiled in a made man lagoon (0.1 km2) close to the complex. The area is covered by recent aeolian sands overlying lagoonal muds. Underneath these muds, there are up to 50m of Quaternary sediments which show graded bedding. Below the Quaternary, Cretaceous sediments thicken to the west and directly overlie Pre-Cambrian schists.
