Abstract

The fundamental building block of extensional basins is a localized rift sub-basin, overlain by a more regional postrift thermal subsidence basin. The highly simplified pure shear model of McKenzie (1978) predicts that the ratio of the synrift to postrift thickness is constant for given crustal and lithosphere thickness. Kusznir and Ziegler (1992) developed a more sophisticated model including faults, and concluded that the synrift to postrift ratio is controlled by the location (and thus spacing) of the faults and their individual amounts of displacement. In both of these studies an instantaneous stretching phase was assumed.
