Abstract

Oil production from most hydrocarbon reservoirs are affected by fractures, and it is well documented that fracture systems may significantly affect reservoir quality, either by enhancing (Watts 1983), of by depressing permeability (Antonellini & Aydin, 1995). Parameters which contribute to the influence of fractures are fracture type (fracture mode, fracture morphology and fracture fill), geometry of and conductivity within the three-dimensional fracture network (fracture frequency, orientation and length), matrix porosity, contrasts in strength and permeability between different layers within the reservoir rock body.
