P095 SEISMIC WAVE ATTENUATION IN BASALT FROM VSP DATA Summary 1 Seismic wave attenuation in basalts was measured using Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) synthetic and real data. Attenuation values were analysed to understand if the poor quality of the seismic signals commonly associated with volcanic rocks can be explained by unusually high intrinsic attenuation values or mainly by scattering effects. Synthetic data were generated in a very complex 3-D velocity model created using both deterministic and statistical information from the real world (seismic data borehole data). 1- D 2-D and 3-D synthetic VSP data were generated in this model using
