Abstract

Traditionally, seismic inversion takes place in the (time) migrated CMP-offset domain. In this paper, we present an alternative target-oriented, linear full waveform inversion scheme. We use a data-driven redatuming step towards a target event to optimally correct for overburden propagation effects. By assuming the target layers to be approximately parallel, a local inversion process per depth point in the linear Radon domain is carried out, allowing an accurate comparison with forward modeled events in the ray parameter domain. Per local inversion process, we apply more advanced inversion tools, including multiplicative regularization and detailed kinematics estimation, to improve upon conventional inversion techniques. This inversion strategy is demonstrated on field data from the Arabian Gulf.
