Abstract

In seismic multiple attenuation, “multiple prediction through inversion (MPI)” scheme builds the multiple model by updating the attenuated multiple wavefield in the previous iteration to generate a multiple prediction for the new iteration, as in an iterative inverse problem. In this paper, we compare and discuss the existing internal-multiple attenuation methods and apply the MPI scheme for the internal-multiple prediction to refine the results. We demonstrate the effectiveness using synthetic and real data application examples. The results show that the MPI scheme is much more accurate both kinematically and dynamically, in comparison with the extension of other free-surface multiple attenuation methods based on wave equation.
