Abstract

Iranian Makran, the western part of the Makran subduction zone demonstrates little or no significant seismicity in modern seismological era and is considered by many researchers as inactive. The sparse local seismological network has caused many of such studies to be faced with uncertainties and therefore the need for careful and deterministic studies is crucial. In order to perform such a study we have applied the inversion of teleseismic body-waves to select earthquakes in the region to acquire the calibrated focal parameters for these events. However, the uncertainties imposed by this means are considerable and thus we have tried to put extra constraints on our solutions through using locationmagnitude data inversion results along with geological and tectonic evidence. This would result in acquiring meaningful reasonable solutions which will greatly improve our knowledge of the general trends of seismicity in the Iranian Makran. The results of our study proves that the trends of seismicity in the Iranian Makran agree with imbricate pattern of seismicity of a subduction zone and that the Iranian Makran is indeed an active subduction zone.
