On the Seismic Vulnerability of Provadia area (NE Bulgaria)

The present seismic activity of Provadia area shows an abrupt increase in the amount of relatively stronger events for the last 30 - 40 years. It becomes comparable to the same amount of events for the most active seismic zones in Bulgaria. That is why the high seismic vulnerability of the old building stock in the region of interest is considered. Effects of the seismic impact on different type of structures are presented. They are illustrated with exemplifying original photos of destruction and damages induced by the earthquake. Taking into account the level of seismicity of Provadia region and the vulnerability aspects conclusions and recommendations about the seismic risk mitigation are made.
