Abstract

The objective of the seismic method has always been to map the response of the earth. However, acquisition imposed effects are incorporated in the seismic data limiting our ability to achieve this. These acquisition-related effects are the two sea surface reflections, and the response of the source and the receiver systems. In 2007 the technology of multi-component streamers was introduced to the marine seismic exploration industry. The combination of pressure and particle motion sensors allows the effects of the receiver sea surface reflection to be removed from seismic data. The response of the receiver system is broadband and well known, so this term can also be handled. This leaves the source response and the source ghost. This paper will describe a system that allows the acquisition-related terms to be removed from seismic data to reveal the response of the earth. The three key steps are the removal of the source ghost, the removal of the receiver ghost and the removal of the source response. Each of the steps is equally vital and the robust execution of each step relies on an acquisition system that is designed to produce appropriate complementary functions. Data examples will also be shown.
