Comparison of Kirchhoff and Q Migration on Resolution Enhancement and Amplitude-preservation - A Case Study in Tarim Basin

Abstract
Resolution enhancement and amplitude-preservation are two important goals for reservoir imaging. Commonly used in oil industry, conventional Kirchhoff migration could hardly deal with viscoelasticity attenuation issue, resulting in low resolution and weak amplitude, which brings difficulty in prestack elastic inversion and reservoir interpretation. In contrast, Q-compensation migration can favorably solve these problems by incorporating complex travel time in migration algorithm. Carbonate reservoirs of Tarim Basin in Western China are deeply buried and encounter severe issue on resolution and amplitude, caused by strong attenuation and absorption. Amplitude-preserved Q-compensation migration is adopted in this paper to compensate absorbed energy and thus to enhance resolution and recovery amplitude in deep reservoirs. Then, the comparison between conventional Kirchhoff migration and Q-compensation migration on resolution enhancement and amplitude-preservation is discussed. In the end, the advantages of Q-compensation migration are evaluated and verified through well logging data and lithology structure data.
