Abstract

Prudent geological understanding of the different types of sands in deep-water reservoirs is imperative to characterize the petrophysical response of advanced well log measurements. An attempt has been made to understand how borehole images, nuclear magnetic resonance and tri-axial induction measurements estimates of horizontal and vertical resistivity would respond against different types of sands in the sub-surface. Academia has various and complex classifications for different sands as various architectural elements of the depositional system. However; for simplicity of petrophysical analysis, four types of sands are discussed; massive sands, bedded sand, thin beds and debris flow. A detailed account of expected and observed responses is given against each of them. Any anomaly from this could mean the requirement of a detailed insightful investigation to honor the geological complexities encountered. This work presents a guideline to petrophysical characterization of the deep-water sands, while honoring the geological evolution.
