Abstract

Russell, Gray, and Hampson have argued in favour of AVO/AVA analysis expressed in terms of poroelastic parameters, and have derived and applied a linearized approximation of this kind. Here we re-cast the exact plane-wave Zoeppritz equations for seismic reflection coefficients in terms of this fluid term. Using this as a starting point, we next expand the solution for the P-P reflection coefficient in orders of incidence angle and density, shear modulus and the fluid term. Our formulation includes linear as well as nonlinear terms. The linear term is consistent with those found in literature. Numerical tests indicate the nonlinear contributions have a significant influence on AVO/AVA modeling when contrasts are large.
