With this special issue we present selected papers about Magnetic Resonance Sounding derived from the 5th Workshop called “Magnetic Resonance in the Subsurface”, which took place in Hannover (Germany) from 25–27 September 2012. The Scientific Committee of the workshop (consisting of Ugur Yaramanci, Mike Müller-Petke, Esben Auken, Stephan Costabel, Jean-Francois Girard, Rosemary Knight, Gerhard Lange, Anatoly Legchenko, Juan Luis Plata) is very happy to have been able to convince the authors of many selected talks to bring their innovative work forward in a peer-reviewed paper in a special issue in Near Surface Geophysics. The breadth of the workshop, structured around measurement technology, signal processing, modelling and inversion, advances in hydrological parameterization, and case studies, was covered by some 40 talks and is well reflected in the presented papers in this special issue. This, we believe, will serve as a good comprehensive reference for the method.
