Abstract

Summary

We present an example of applying multi-parameter acoustic anisotropic Full Wavefield Inversion (FWI) to Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) data. Compared to conventional surface streamer data, OBN data typically have several characteristics that make them particularly suitable for FWI: richer low frequency content, longer offsets, fixed receiver geometry, and large number of traces per receiver gather. On the other hand, because of the large distances between adjacent nodes, it is difficult to apply conventional velocity model building algorithms which usually rely on well-sampled angle or offset gathers. We demonstrate how to exploit the advantages of OBN data in order to bypass conventional velocity model building steps.

The FWI-based approach led to significant cycle time reduction compared to the application of traditional processing sequences and allowed us to obtain estimates of vertical velocity and Thompsen anisotropy parameters, which were validated through imaging and well ties.
