Abstract

Summary

To characterize Permian Linxi Formation and disclose the tectonic framework of the Jarud Basin, a magnetotelluric survey with five NW profiles and three NE Profiles was performed from 2012 to 2013. The survey results disclosed numerous faults, some of which determine the west boundaries of the Jarud Basin. Some conductive zones were also discovered, and are considered as the mudstones associated with shale gas. In addition, Thick Permian Linxi Formation strata exceeding 4 km in depth were discovered in the middle west of the Jarud Basin. Thick Permian Shoushangou Formation strata were characterized in depth. Both Permian Formation strata have the potential of shale gas.
