Abstract
One of the industry’s greatest current challenges is the ability to image subsalt reservoirs with sufficient accuracy to pinpoint the deepwater oil and gas deposits and reduce drilling risk.
Since 2005 several wide azimuth (WAZ) surveys have been acquired to improve the illumination of subsalt prospects in various regions of the world such as the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West Africa and the Red Sea. The processing results of these surveys have clearly shown that WAZ data does provide a step change improvement in subsalt imaging. However despite the significant progress in recent years, there remain many challenging areas for earth model building and imaging in the most complex geological environments.
Modeling studies show that acquiring full azimuth data with long offsets can further improve illumination in complex and steeply dipping subsalt structures
