Abstract
Following recent progress in full waveform inversion (FWI), we demonstrate a multiparameter inversion methodology through a real-data exercise that assumes long-offset acquisition. Most FWI implementations rely on velocity-only updates, even if forward propagation is anisotropic. To embark on multiparameter inversion, the imaging condition must be adjusted, and the proper strategy implemented, to achieve convergence to the global minima. We elected a broadband dataset from the Gulf of Mexico to demonstrate the robustness of our multiparameter FWI implementation. Along with the inverted results of velocity and epsilon, we present the imaging improvements seen in the inverted fields from using reverse time migration at initial versus final inverted stages as well as common-image-gather and cross-correlation quality control, with results showing how well the predicted data explains the acquired data at the starting step versus the final inverted level.
