Abstract

Summary

Multiples are very important for seismic exploration. Some people regard the multiples as noises, and develop many techniques to attenuate them. In contrast, some people try to make use of the multiples to obtain better image results. In this paper, we propose a direct modeling method to simulate the free surface multiples for OBC data acquisition system. This method is divided into two steps: first modify the velocity model by adding a mirror image layer on top of the original model, and set the new geophones symmetrically to the old ones with respect to the sea surface; after that, absorbing condition is employed on the new model’s surface to compute the primary reflections, which is proved to have the same travelling time with the surface multiples. Numerical example indicates that this mirror image method help to simulate the surface multiples precisely and efficiently.
