Abstract
Summary
The Magdalena fan offshore Colombia is situated on an active margin with ongoing subduction of the Caribbean plate beneath the South American plate. The margin is characterized by a long wide accretionary prism with clear thrust faults, called the Sinu prism to the west and the South Caribbean deformed belt to the north. These prisms are separated by the Magdalena fan which is being fed by the very sediment rich Magdalena River. Within the fan no clear deformation structures is evident from the seismic. 3D analogue modelling has been used to simulates a subduction zone with a high rate synsedimentary point source in order to propose a likely interpretation of the geological processes in the study area.
