Abstract

In the oil industry, geologists, geophysicists, and petroleum engineers work daily on workstations with high graphical and mathematical performance GPU. These workstations, however, although being important for their jobs, usually remain idle for long periods of time. This paper presents the implementation of a cluster of workstations that takes advantage of the idleness of these high performance computers and their GPU in order to process seismic data by using specific algorithms that were developed at Petrobras. With the adoption of the aforementioned solution, Petrobras was able to significantly increase its seismic data processing capacity without investing on IT infrastructure and without negatively impacting the work of geologists, geophysicists, and petroleum engineers, i.e., the workstations users.
