Abstract

The accurate pressure prediction and fluid velocity distribution in the wellbore cross-section require a detailed description of the mud flow in the annular gap. Drillstring rotation and eccentricity should be taken into account. The description must resolve flow structure in detail, which the classical one-dimensional hydrodynamics model can’t provide. Numerical flow modeling was used for accurate prediction of mud flow characteristics while drilling. However numerical modeling cannot be directly used in rig-based operations due to high time consumptions. Hence modeling is performed in a laboratory and the results of the calculation are subsequently used during real-time operations. Systematical flow modeling was performed for a broad set of drilling fluids, drilling equipment and operational conditions being used in the drilling industry. HPC resources were involved for serial flow computing. Modeling results in fact produce a flow database which counts more than one million flows and covers practically all drilling scenarios. To reduce the data size special compression techniques were implemented. The fast and accurate algorithm for finding flow parameters is based on interpolation of computed flow parameters stored in the database. Such fast and accurate solution enables drilling engineers to perform quick parameter studies at the rig site.
