Abstract

We present two approaches for performance enhancement of a numerical wave propagation simulation based on spectral element method (SEM). First is a prior-to-run estimation of model parameters. By selecting the right parameters, one can reduce the total number of elements and use the minimal quadrature order while maintaining accurate simulation. Second is the parallel implementation of the numerical scheme. The algorithm presented is a hybrid approach of shared (openMP) and distributed (MPI) memory levels of parallelization. We are able to overlap the computational effort with the data communications, which in interesting cases, allows a close-to-linear speedup of the simulation.
