Abstract

Summary

A very accurate model, including layer complexities as well as accurate anisotropy parameters, is required to minimize location errors in processing microseismic data with an absolute technique; if velocity model approximation is significant, as in absence of detailed information, the locations would be largely biased. This work shows that by employing a relative technique, a detailed knowledge of the velocity model becomes of second order. The template, or master event, is also used to retrieve a simplified equivalent velocity model, employing which the location errors remain acceptable for events spatially close to the template.
