Abstract
We derive the phase velocity dispersion and the scattering for wave vertically propagating in a periodically weak‐contrast horizontally layered medium with arbitrary number of layers in a period. Phase velocity dispersion is defined as the frequency dependence of vertical travel time, and scattering is defined as a reflection coefficient at the interface between the multilayered system and the corresponding Backus medium. Low‐frequency approximation is used to define a dynamic effective medium with frequency‐dependent phase velocity. The results are compared with those obtained earlier for a gradient medium. We show that the low‐frequency weak‐contrast approximation is valid for models with realistic contrasts in elastic properties.
