Abstract

The offshore Brunei acreage that Shell Deepwater Borneo (SDB) operates (Figure 1) provides both opportunities and exploration challenges. In order to identify material prospects and to secure future exploration success, legacy play and prospectivity concepts needed to be updated: large conventional, shallow traps and obvious hydrocarbon-induced amplitude-supported prospects are absent - instead, the search is on for deeper and not directly amplitude supported prospects, which demands application of innovative exploration workflows. As an example for its application of novel technologies, SDB leverages 3D Broadband seismic data acquired in its offshore shallow water blocks. The data was pre-stack depth migrated and subsequently interpreted by leveraging multi-disciplinary integration of the geophysical with geological and petrophysical data. Through the use of advanced visualization technologies, this data now crucially supports SDB’s exploration campaign. For a prospect example, we showcase the successful application of a reservoir prediction workflow that utilizes the new broadband seismic data. We present a workflow that consists of four major steps: 1. rock and fluid property analysis, 2. elastic impedance inversion, 3. body-checking for litho-fluid discrimination, and 4. cutting-edge visualization/sculpting techniques.
