Abstract
Migration Velocity Analysis methods are usually restricted to primary reflections because multiples are known to produce spurious events on the Common Image Gathers, thus affecting the determination of the background velocity model. We propose to apply iterative migration on data containing both primaries and first-order surface-related multiples to obtain a reflectivity model free of artefacts. First, the subsurface offset domain is extended to the case of multiple reflections. We present efficient ways to model the data and compute the gradient of the objective function associated to the reflectivity part. We illustrate our method with a simple 2D example. We show that artefacts created at the first iteration in the CIGs can be attenuated by iterating, even in an incorrect velocity model.
