Abstract
In downhole microseismic monitoring, P and/or S traveltimes and their differences are often inverted or searched for event locations. We further include the derivatives of P and/or S traveltimes with respect to depth and fit the shapes of traveltime curves in the data for grid search. We find that results are more reliable in depth with the addition of such unique data information. In dealing with real data, we find that P wave is often very small or invisible. However, with at least one P-wave pick and many S-wave picks, we find that the above improved grid search approach still produces reasonable results. This is because combining S-wave derivatives and one pair of S-P traveltime difference can constrain the uncertainty of the results to a narrow zone. We demonstrate the new approach and its uncertainty with synthetics and real data.
