Abstract

Summary

In a multi-parameter full waveform inversion, the gradient of the misfit function at each subsurface point depends on the radiation patterns of the earth parameters. In most of the published analyses, an isotropic background is assumed. Here, we extend the analysis to an elastic vertical transverse isotropy medium. We derive analytic formulas for the PP radiation patterns under a weak anisotropic assumption. This allows us to explicitly introduce the role of the elastic anisotropic background. The shear background mainly influences the density radiation pattern. We split the discussion between a transmission case and a reflection case and discuss the possible inversion artifacts in these two situations. The conclusions do not really differ from the ones already published in literature when only an isotropic background is assumed.
