Abstract
The existence of fault relays along segmented normal faults can perturb the fluid flow behavior. Indeed, even at small scale (below seismic resolution and reservoir grid resolution), those features can act as barriers or conduits. A numerical method taking into account small-scale relays in reservoir simulations is proposed. The first step of the method is to stochastically simulate relays along the fault plane. Each relay is defined according to shape parameters. Then to evaluate the connectivities created across the fault and between the layers for each relay, a graph of transmissibilities is calculated. This graph is then uspcaled through a renormalization method to obtain non neighbour connections added into the flow simulation.
The method is tested and validated on synthetic models. Finally an application of the method to an oil field located offshore West Africa is presented.
