Abstract

Summary

The Mariner field is a shallow heavy-oil development field in the UK sector of the North Sea with a number of challenges for seismic characterization. Broadband seismic data can benefit reservoir characterization, and in particular a small improvement in low-frequency content can add significant value to seismic amplitude inversions. We present a study using multimeasurement towed-streamer seismic acquisition over the Mariner field. The impact of residual source deghosting and a Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) velocity model is evaluated in terms of imaging and bandwidth extension on inversion results. These steps help minimize the low-frequency gap – reducing the reliance on well data to guide inversion. The result is improved well ties, predictability, S/N ratio, and representative layer thicknesses in both relative and absolute acoustic impedance volumes, particularly across the Heimdal and Lista formations.
