Abstract

Summary

Landslides are major mass wasting processes and their early detection not only helps in minimizing life loss, but also helps in planning of future construction projects. Landslides mainly occur in hilly areas ie, area of high slope driven due to gravity or triggered by earthquake, rainfall or road construction among many other human activities. In our study, landslide hazard zonation map of Kedarnath area is prepared using optical imagery and GIS techniques taking into consideration coping capacity and exposure. The results indicate that landslide occurrence possibility is quite high along roadsides especially which are steeper and nearer to the river or hills as they are more prone to erosion. This factor should be taken into consideration while road construction and human settlement planning.
