Abstract

Summary

The article describes the first implementation of reservoir-scale mapping while drilling technology in Russia for precise well landing in the North Caspian offshore field. The technology, mentioned above, is based on electromagnetic propagation method. It provides a wide range of directional electromagnetic measurements. Remote detection of reservoir top at up to ∼20 m TVD distance allows for resolving a wide range of geological and technological challenges. The example of the first productive well on offshore Filanovskogo field demonstrates successful precise landing a well 2–3 m above the target reservoir in environment, characterized by a very high structural uncertainty. Implementation of the new technology granted reaching all the well objectives. Moreover, it allowed for avoiding drilling a pilot hole on this well. Economic impact of the above result is incontestable. Hence, the article illustrates a new approach to solving various geological and technological challenges in oil and gas field development.
