Abstract
1000 m long horizontal section was planned in carbonate target formation, with the formation cap represented by erosional surface. Based on performed feasibility analysis, which included evaluation of technology applicability and assessment of the uncertainties and associated risks, the measurements, technologies and services were chosen. The bottomhole assembly, apart from other tools, also included the multilayer bed boundary detection technology. This technology was critical at the execution stage – it allowed for mapping of steeply dipping formation cap and for steering horizontal section within the reservoir formation. The set of measurements allowed for real time petrophysical evaluation of rock properties.
As a result of the first application of the technology in West Kazakhstan, the objectives were achieved, 100% of the horizontal section was placed within the target formation. The initial production substantially exceeded expectations.
