Abstract

Summary

Availability of the most actual structural model and knowledge of formation lithology are critically important for successful horizontal well placement, as the structure behavior, crossed faults, local heterogeneities (fractures, lenses), and thickness variations in adjacent wells are taken as a basis for preliminary modeling prior to geosteering. Knowledge of tectonic fault distribution is necessary for updating the geological model for more successful operation of the producing formation.

Use of the resistivity imaging tool in the reviewed well made it possible to adjust the bedding angles, identify intrastratal cross-beddings and to determine indirect indicators of fault detection by other well logging methods. Besides, the use of the imaging tool data allowed correction of the well completion design.

Therefore, integration of well, seismic and geosteering data, and consideration of interpretation of high resolution imaging results is necessary for building the most detailed and accurate geological model of the drilling area and, as a consequence, for further drilling optimization and successful development of the field.
