Abstract

Summary

The palaeoshelf Ediacaran strata, stretching along the southwestern margin of the East-European Platform from the border of Ukraine with Poland and Belarus throughWest Ukraine(Volyn-Podillyan Plate), Moldova (Moldovian Platform) and Southwest Ukraine (Dobrogean Foredeep) to Black Sea, comprise a black shale level represented by Kalus Beds, which can be considered as potential petroleum source rocks. The coeval organic-rich rocks are known to have sourced commercial accumulations of oil and gas in different parts of the world. TOC content in mudstones Kalus age reaching nearly 1%, organic matter is represented by remains of Vendotenides and by amorphous organic matter. Phosphate mineralization is related to Kalus Beds too. Ediacaran sequence is made up of clayey-terrigenous rocks (conglomerates, gritstone, sandstones, siltstones, mudstones). Analysis of the features of Ediacaran deposits occurrence in the study area, petrographic composition, changes of thicknesses, allowed identification of ancient river valleys,

The burial and thermal history was reconstructed for the Ediacaran strata in the Volyn-Podillyan Plate and Moldovian Platform. The modelling indicated that the onset of “oil window” phase occurred from the early Devonian through the early Carboniferous period. Slightly higher maturity of organic matter was observed in boreholes nearest TESZ zone.
