Abstract

Summary

Fractures can be the main source of porosity and permeability development in carbonate reservoirs. In this study, the efficiency of reflection seismic and Side-View Seismic Location (SVSL) techniques in detecting and characterizing fault-related fractures has been investigated in a giant oilfield of Southwest Iran. The outcomes of the study have been subsequently validated using numerical modeling of trishear fault propagation folding. Results suggested a trishear zone developed in association with the main thrust fault in the southwestern flank of the studied anticline.

Numerical modeling of trishear fault propagation folding also predicted the strike and dip angle of the fractures. The results of numerical modeling are fully honored by the well image log data. The propagation of trishear zone produced a highly fractured zone that may be the main source of high permeability and production in this part of the reservoir.
