Abstract

Summary

Located in the northeast of Bohai Bay Basin, the Liaozhong depression inversion belt has been receiving more and more attention for its favourable petroleum geological conditions. However, limited knowledge about the genetic mechanism of the structural inversion belt hinders the oil and gas exploration in this area. Traditional forward modelling methods exclusively highlight the simple structures in the single fault and fail to analyse the fault properties. Therefore, they are not applicable in the structural inversion belt controlled by multiple faults. In this study, we propose the quantitative fault characterization-based forward modelling to establish the differential inversion models in the southern and northern inversion belt during two periods by combining the quantitative fault characterization and forward modelling. It is found that large-scale traps developed in the deeper part are favourable for the late oil and gas charging, and thus should be the target for the future exploration.
