Abstract

Summary

To obtain the benefits of simultaneous source acquisition, we must deal with the interference between sources. Interference is typically mitigated by actively separating energy relating to different sources prior to conventional processing. Here, we study application of a robust imaging condition to reverse time migration of a 3D marine simultaneous source field data set. The robust imaging condition suppresses simultaneous source interference by using the fact that true reflectors must be coherently imaged by closely located shots, and that interference is due to only a small subset of simultaneous sources and, hence, is sparse as a function of shot location. We found it to significantly reduce crosstalk image artifacts. The best results were obtained when using the robust imaging condition in conjunction with active separation, which was challenged by a coarse shot spacing and strong-on-weak amplitudes, to further suppress interference.
